DIIV release ZIRP! today, 30 October 2026, on Fantasy Recordings. It is the Brooklyn band's first full album since 2024's Frog in Boiling Water, and the first to be produced by A.G. Cook, the producer best known for his long run of work with Charli xcx, including the Brat era.
What is on it
ZIRP! runs to 11 tracks: "The Fountain", "Kid", "When The Glow Came For Us", "Dare Me", "The Crash", "Trillions", "Us Against You", "Evangelizer", "Underground", "My Star" and "Idiot In The Sky". "The Fountain" was the lead single and "Kid" followed as the second.
DIIV are Zachary Cole Smith on vocals and guitar, Andrew Bailey on guitar, Colin Caulfield on bass and vocals, and Ben Newman on drums. For newcomers: they came up in the early 2010s Brooklyn scene with a shimmering, guitar-layered sound that sits between dream pop, shoegaze and post-punk, and they have spent each record since pushing it somewhere heavier or stranger.
The Cook connection
The pairing is the story here. Cook has described the sessions as a process of destroying and rebuilding the band's demos, and he has said he became a bit obsessed with how the band sounds live. That fits a band whose records have always leaned on layered guitar tone: a producer from the hyperpop and club side of pop is a left-field choice, which is why it is interesting.
The band is also selling the record as more than an album. Its own site pitches ZIRP! as "The New Alternative", a new genre for the 21st century, and a phone line tied to the rollout carries an audio message calling it "the future of alternative multimedia entertainment". Whether that is a joke, a thesis or both is part of the fun.
Where to start
If you are new to the band, start with the two singles, then play the record front to back. We have not written a review: this is a guide to what is on it and how it came together, and we will say more once the desk has lived with it.
Live
DIIV spent October on a North American run, including dates opening for Interpol and a Los Angeles show with Basement. Their rollout has also pointed to festival appearances in South America and Europe. Check the band's official channels for anything new.
