Dave Grohl got to live out an 11-year-old's dream on Friday night. On 2 October 2026, the Foo Fighters frontman walked out at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and played "Highway to Hell" with AC/DC.
What happened
Foo Fighters had already played the opening set that night, which is a story in itself. According to Blabbermouth, they were added to the bill after AC/DC's originally scheduled MetLife date was postponed because of a nor'easter. It was the second time in under a month that Foo Fighters stepped in as AC/DC's support on the PWR UP Tour, following an earlier fill-in at a St. Louis show on 8 September, per the same report.
Later, during the AC/DC set, singer Brian Johnson set it up from the stage. "A very good friend of ours asked us tonight if he could come and join us up on stage for 'Highway to Hell,'" he told the crowd, as quoted by Blabbermouth. "And we said, 'Yes, Dave, you can.'"
Grohl played guitar toward the back of the stage and stepped up to share a mic with rhythm guitarist Stevie Young for the backing vocals on the chorus, according to Blabbermouth and Consequence. Afterwards he bowed to Angus Young and the two hugged. Stereogum notes that AC/DC rarely shares the stage with guests, which is what made this one stand out.
Why it meant so much to him
Grohl has talked for years about the AC/DC concert film Let There Be Rock. During Foo Fighters' set, Consequence reports, he told the crowd he saw it at 11 years old and decided that was what he wanted to do, saying he "didn't know that rock and roll could be like that."
Consequence's review of the night describes Foo Fighters' set as nine songs, closing with "Everlong", and Consequence and The Music Universe both describe the show as the end of AC/DC's long PWR UP run. We have not been able to confirm that with the band, so treat the finale label as their reporting.
The India connection
Foo Fighters are also on their way to India. We have covered the build-up to the shows, from the first Bandland teaser to who is opening them. If you want to know what a Grohl-led stadium night sounds like before then, the band's artist page has the catalogue, and AC/DC are there too if you want to hear the song he was handed.
Fan-filmed footage of the "Highway to Hell" moment is circulating online, and Blabbermouth, Consequence and Stereogum all carry write-ups.
