Chris Brown has avoided prison for the 2023 attack on a producer at a London nightclub. On Monday 26 October 2026, a judge at Southwark Crown Court in London gave the 37-year-old R&B singer an eight-month custodial sentence, suspended for 12 months. That means he does not serve the time unless he reoffends during the suspension period.
What happened in court
Brown pleaded guilty to affray on 24 July 2026. Affray is the UK offence of using or threatening unlawful violence in a way that makes other people fear for their safety. In return for that plea, prosecutors dropped the more serious charges he had faced, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing an offensive weapon, a bottle. The offence carried a maximum of three years in prison.
The case goes back to 19 February 2023, when a fight broke out on the dance floor at Tape, a private members' club in Mayfair. Brown struck producer Abraham Diaw, a former friend, on the head with a bottle. Video of the night showed Brown being pulled away from Diaw. Diaw was treated at hospital for head and knee injuries.
Judge Tony Baumgartner described the use of the bottle as plainly dangerous, with a risk of a much more serious injury. He treated Brown as the main aggressor in what was a joint offence, and took into account Brown's earlier convictions for violence in 2009 and 2013, while noting a clean record in recent years. Because of the guilty plea and the mitigating factors in the case, he found that an immediate prison sentence was not called for.
The road to sentencing
Brown left the UK after the fight and was arrested in May 2025 at a hotel in Manchester, where he had flown in for a concert. He was held in custody before being released on £5 million bail, which let him tour in Europe and North America last summer. A second man, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray in the same case.
Brown is one of the biggest R&B stars of his generation, with a catalogue that runs from the 2005 debut that made him a teenage star through to his recent stadium tours. His artist page, with our other coverage, is at /artist/chris-brown.
We will update this story if further detail on the terms of the sentence is confirmed.
