The wait is over. Dead Man's Bones, the duo of actor Ryan Gosling and musician Zach Shields, have released "Lost in the Night", their first new music since their self-titled debut in 2009.
It is out as a single on streaming services, and an official video is on the band's YouTube channel, shared with their label ANTI-. We told you on 23 October that the band had set a date for their return; the song arrived right on schedule, just before Halloween.
A song the band already knew
This is not a brand new idea. A live recording of a song called "Lost in the Night" from the band's FYF Fest set on 4 September 2010 is on YouTube, so fans have known the title for a long time. This is the first time it has had a proper studio release. We have not seen the band say how much of the 2010 version survives in the new one, so we will not guess.
Who Dead Man's Bones are
Gosling and Shields formed the band in 2009, between the films Lars and the Real Girl and Blue Valentine. Their debut, released through ANTI- on 2 October 2009, was a homemade gothic pop record built around the Silverlake Conservatory Children's Choir, with graveyard themes and piano that sounds like a haunted house. They played a short run of Halloween-timed shows and then went quiet for 17 years.
What happens next
No album, EP or tour has been announced, and the band has not said whether more songs are coming. If that changes, we will update this story. For now, press play on the video, ideally after dark.
