Power Trip are back. The Dallas thrash band put out two new songs today, "Precinct 3" and "Scavenger", their first new music since the death of singer Riley Gale in August 2020.
Gale died at 34. His death was later attributed to pulmonary edema from an accidental fentanyl overdose. He fronted the band through 2017's Nightmare Logic, the record that made Power Trip one of the defining heavy bands of the decade, and the loss left a gap that the band took years to address.
The new songs
The release is a double single: a video for "Precinct 3" and an audio stream of "Scavenger". The vocals are by Seth Gilmore, the new frontman. A full-length album is in the works and is due in spring 2027. A label has not been named in the announcement.
Guitarist Blake Ibanez has said that when the band began writing "Precinct 3" they asked themselves what Riley would have wanted to write about. Gilmore has described "Scavenger" as being about people who ride along and build a sense of self-importance from their association with others.
Shows lined up
Power Trip have three dates on the calendar before the year is out:
- 21 October 2026: supporting Slayer in Mexico City
- 24 October 2026: Sick New World festival in Fort Worth, Texas
- 20 November 2026: Pantera's Great NOLA Trendkill in New Orleans
Those are tough rooms for a debut with a new singer, and a good measure of how much goodwill the band still carries in the heavy community.
We will have more when the album title and tracklist are announced.
