Wyclef Jean puts Carlos Santana on a "Freedom" remix, 27 years after "Maria Maria"

Wyclef Jean and Carlos Santana are back on the same record. "Freedom (Carlos Santana Remix)" came out on 16 October 2026, with an accompanying video, and it puts Santana's guitar on a song Wyclef first released on his own.
If you are meeting Wyclef through this headline: he is the Haitian-born musician and producer who co-founded the Fugees, and he has spent the years since moving between hip-hop, reggae, rock and Caribbean sounds. Santana is the Mexican-born guitarist whose singing, sustained lead lines have defined Latin rock since the late 1960s.
The song they made in 1999
The two have history. Wyclef co-wrote and co-produced "Maria Maria", the Santana single from the 1999 album Supernatural with The Product G&B. It spent ten weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2000 and won a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Years later it was sampled again on DJ Khaled's "Wild Thoughts" with Rihanna and Bryson Tiller.
What "Freedom" is
"Freedom" was first released on Clef Notes: Quantum Leap, Vol. 1, the opening instalment of what Wyclef has described as a planned seven-album project. The remix keeps the song and adds Santana's playing. The Apple Music listing shows it as a single of about three minutes, credited to Wyclef Jean and released through his own SodoMoodLab.
No tour, album date or further collaboration was announced alongside the remix. We will update this story if that changes.
You can find Wyclef's Apple Music page here. For more on Santana, see his ADMC artist page.
