Tony Iommi's first solo album in 21 years is out today, 23 October 2026. From the Dark arrives on BMG, credited to Tony Iommi and Jørn Lande, and runs to eight songs and about 42 minutes on the Apple Music listing.
Iommi is the guitarist who wrote the riffs that defined Black Sabbath and, with them, heavy metal itself. His last solo record was Fused in 2005, made with Glenn Hughes, so this is a long-awaited return to a project under his own name.
Who is on it
The lineup is compact. Iommi plays guitar. Norwegian singer Jørn Lande, a veteran of Masterplan and Allen-Lande who also records solo, takes the vocals. Becky Baldwin, who has played with Mercyful Fate and Fury, is on bass, and Karl Brazil, known for work with James Blunt, Robbie Williams and Feeder, is on drums. Iommi co-produced with Mike Exeter.
The songs
The standard edition runs to eight songs. Named in the running order are "Over the Violent Sun" (the opener), "World Alone", "Beyond the Dead", "Stormwatcher", "Death Wake", "Return of the Arbalist" and "Legacy", which closes the record. The second track is listed under slightly different titles in different places, so we have left it out rather than guess. A deluxe edition adds two earlier instrumentals, "Scent of Dark" and "Deified".
Two songs came out ahead of the album. "World Alone" was the first single, an uptempo track with a video, and "Stormwatcher" followed with a video of its own.
Why it matters
Iommi has spent recent years in the Black Sabbath legacy business, so a fresh set of songs under his own name is news in itself. It also pairs him with a younger rhythm section, which is the part of the lineup we will be listening for.
We have not formed a verdict on the album and will not pretend to. If you want a way in, start with the two singles, then play the whole record in one sitting.
Formats
The album is available digitally and on CD, with a deluxe CD carrying the two bonus instrumentals, and on double vinyl.
