The Raconteurs' debut album turns 20 this year, and Third Man Records is marking it the way the label does best: with a lavish, limited vinyl box. Broken Boy Soldiers XX is Vault Package #70, and it is built almost entirely from material nobody has heard.
The Raconteurs are the band Jack White formed with Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler. Their 2006 debut gave the world "Steady, As She Goes" and "Level", and it arrived while White was still best known for The White Stripes.
What is in the box
According to the official Vault announcement, the package runs to 23 tracks across three LPs, and 22 of them have never been released.
- The first show. A previously unreleased recording of the band's debut live performance, in Liverpool on 20 March 2006. Jack White has said of that night that he was not used to being able to take a sip of water in the middle of a song, a reminder of how different the pace was from The White Stripes.
- Demos and alternate takes. Studio demos, alternate versions and fragments from the album sessions, including an unreleased song called "Mech Royal".
- Two covers. Love's "A House Is Not A Motel" and the Flamin' Groovies' "Headin' For The Texas Border".
The vinyl is pressed on metallic copper, grand green and coke bottle clear. It comes in two gatefold jackets inside a slipcase, with a strip of film from the "Steady, As She Goes" video shoot on transparent stock, plus one of four collectible trading cards, some with randomly distributed autographs and foils.
How to get it
Vault packages are only available to Vault subscribers. Sign-ups for #70 are open until midnight Central time on 31 October 2026 through Third Man's Vault subscription page. The announcement does not list a streaming release, so the unheard recordings look set to live on vinyl for now.
For a record that helped define mid-2000s garage rock, a first-ever live document is the headline. If you want the original first, the album is on streaming services, and you can find more on the band's ADMC artist page.
