John Legend's new album Muse arrives on Friday, 23 October 2026 through Republic Records. It is produced in full and co-written by Pharrell Williams, the first time the two have made a whole record together, and it runs to 16 tracks.
For readers meeting him for the first time: Legend is one of the defining voices of 21st-century soul and R&B, a piano-led songwriter whose catalogue stretches from "Ordinary People" to "All of Me". Pharrell is the producer and one half of The Neptunes, the sound behind a large share of early-2000s hip-hop and pop. On paper it is an obvious pairing. Legend has said he did exactly that sort of thinking himself, noting that the combination of the two of them "on paper, I think, is a good idea."
What Legend says he was after
The aim, per the album announcement, was a reset. "I wanted to shake up the formula and do something fresh and new," Legend said. He also framed the sessions as a collaboration with no scorekeeping: "It's not about winning the argument or ego. It's about the music winning. Every battle should be won by the art."
The tracklist at a glance
Pharrell appears as a featured voice on six songs: the title track "Muse", "Her", "Get Back", "Are You OK?", "Next Time" and "Fireflies". The one other guest is Clipse, the Virginia rap duo and long-time Pharrell collaborators, on "Bodies On The Floor".
The full running order:
- Muse (feat. Pharrell Williams)
- Pray For Ya
- Her Introduction
- Her (feat. Pharrell Williams)
- Daylight
- Get Back (feat. Pharrell Williams)
- Are You OK? (feat. Pharrell Williams)
- Under The Bridge Introduction
- Under The Bridge
- Next Time (feat. Pharrell Williams)
- Bodies On The Floor, Taps Introduction
- Bodies On The Floor (feat. Clipse)
- Doing Me
- Fireflies (feat. Pharrell Williams)
- Everything
- Sail Off
Three short "Introduction" tracks sit in the sequence, which suggests the album is meant to be played front to back rather than shuffled. We have not heard the record yet, so we are not going to tell you how it plays.
Singles and how it was previewed
"Daylight" is the lead single, released alongside the announcement on 8 September. Legend gave it a live television debut on CBS's America's Tailgate. "Pray For Ya" was previewed earlier through Louis Vuitton's Fall-Winter 2026 menswear show and a Moët Ice Impérial campaign, though it has not been billed as a single.
Why it matters
Legend's records have usually leaned on his own piano and a classic-soul frame. Handing the whole production seat to Pharrell, whose drum programming and chord choices are instantly recognisable, is the biggest stylistic swerve of his career on paper. It also lands on a Friday already busy with new rap and R&B, so expect Muse to be one of the records people argue about this weekend.
