Hot Chip announce A Long Way From Kansas for 8 January 2027, with Beth Ditto and Eddie Chacon and a ten-date tour

Hot Chip have a new record on the way. A Long Way From Kansas, the London band's ninth album, arrives on 8 January 2027 on Domino, and the first single, "Random Violence", is out now.

The record

It is an 11-track album recorded at Joe Goddard and Al Doyle's Relax and Enjoy studio in East London, the follow-up to 2022's Freakout/Release. The title nods to Dorothy and the long way home in The Wizard of Oz. Alexis Taylor has described the world the record was made in as "particularly harsh, discordant, violent and depressing", and the sound follows: more distorted and more punk-edged than the band's usual glossy dance-pop.

There are two guests. Beth Ditto of Gossip features on "Me In Your Head", and Eddie Chacon, the soul singer who made 2020's Pleasure, Joy and Happiness, appears on "The Garden".

The tracklist, as listed by Domino:

1. Stuck Record
2. Waiting Around
3. Random Violence
4. The Mask Is Slipping
5. Splinter
6. Shortcut To Love
7. Me In Your Head (feat. Beth Ditto)
8. Hook Me Up
9. Secular Hymns
10. The Garden (feat. Eddie Chacon)
11. Crushing

"Random Violence"

The lead single is a tribute to Keith McIvor, the Glasgow DJ known as JD Twitch of Optimo, who died last year. Goddard has said McIvor largely inspired the words. The song sets Goddard's and Taylor's voices against each other and puts acts of violence next to acts of kindness. The video, directed by Jack Cole, features the morris dancing group Boss Morris. Hot Chip will also DJ at Glasgow's Sub Club on 21 October in McIvor's honour.
